The story
At first glance, the viewer sees a boat.
Look longer, and the painting becomes a meditation on human connection with nature.
A lone boatman drifts through an endless carpet of lotus leaves, following waterways that have shaped the rhythms of life in Kerala for centuries. The harvested flowers resting within the vessel are destined for homes, temples, celebrations, and rituals, carrying with them stories of devotion, gratitude, and tradition.
The vast green expanse surrounding the boat serves as a reminder of nature's abundance and resilience. The boatman's journey is small within the larger landscape, yet meaningful. Every paddle stroke represents a tradition passed between generations, where work is performed not in opposition to nature, but in harmony with it.
Viewed from above, the scene resembles a living painting within a painting, echoing Sivabalan's fascination with discovering artistic compositions in the world around him. It is an image of stillness, patience, and coexistence, where the simplest daily act becomes something timeless and profound.
Supplied with a serialised Ivory & Ink certificate of authenticity and framed in the UK by a Guild Certified framer.
Floating through a sea of luminous green, a solitary boat glides silently across the backwaters of Kerala, carrying a harvest of lotus blooms gathered from the water's surface. Viewed from above, the composition transforms a familiar rural scene into an almost abstract tapestry of colour, pattern, and movement.
The dense blanket of lotus leaves creates a rhythm across the canvas, interrupted only by delicate pink blossoms and the narrow passage cut by the vessel below. Sivabalan's characteristic palette knife technique brings energy and texture to every leaf, allowing light to dance across the surface and reveal the living pulse of the landscape.
At once serene and immersive, The Lotus Keepers of Alleppey celebrates the quiet relationship between people and nature, capturing a moment that has unfolded on Kerala's waterways for generations.
