The story
Every dancer begins alone.
Each learns the steps individually. Each develops their own rhythm, confidence, and expression. Yet when the music begins, something remarkable happens.
Six become one.
In When Six Become One, Sivabalan explores the moment where individuality gives way to collective celebration. Each dancer occupies a distinct space, wearing colours that set them apart from the others. Yet a closer look reveals an invisible thread connecting them all, the shared rhythm of the Ghoomar dance and the traditions passed down through generations.
During Rajasthan's Teej Festival, dance becomes more than performance. It becomes community. Individual stories merge into a single celebration, and the boundaries between performer and participant gradually disappear.
Viewed together, the dancers resemble petals scattered by the wind, each moving independently while remaining part of the same bloom. Their colourful garments create a visual rhythm that echoes the music, laughter, and atmosphere of the festival itself.
The title speaks not only to dance but to culture. Communities are built when individuals come together, bringing their own uniqueness while contributing to something greater than themselves.
Through this joyful composition, Sivabalan celebrates unity without uniformity, a reminder that the most beautiful traditions are often those created collectively.
Supplied with a serialised Ivory & Ink certificate of authenticity and framed in the UK by a Guild Certified framer.
In When Six Become One, Sivabalan captures the collective energy of Rajasthan's Teej Festival through six dancers united in rhythm, tradition, and movement. Scattered across the canvas yet visually connected, each figure spins within their own circle of colour, together forming a larger choreography that feels both spontaneous and perfectly composed.
Bright oranges, blues, greens, pinks, and yellows burst across the composition, transforming traditional Rajasthani attire into vibrant expressions of motion. Each dancer contributes a unique gesture and personality, yet together they create a harmonious visual symphony.
The painting celebrates the extraordinary power of communal dance, where individual movements dissolve into a shared expression of joy and cultural identity.
