The story
Inspired by the vibrant celebrations of Rajasthan's Teej Festival, Sivabalan was fascinated by the way Ghoomar dancers create visual patterns through movement alone. As the dancers turn and weave around one another, their colourful garments expand into dynamic forms that seem almost detached from gravity.
What particularly inspired the artist was the way each dancer appears completely immersed in the moment, creating a private world while simultaneously participating in a communal celebration. This delicate balance between individuality and togetherness became the foundation of the work.
Through colour, rhythm, and movement, Sivabalan sought to capture not just the appearance of the dance but the feeling of being fully present within it.
Supplied with a serialised Ivory & Ink certificate of authenticity and framed in the UK by a Guild Certified framer.
In The Centre of Her Own Universe, Sivabalan captures a fleeting moment of perfect balance, movement, and connection. Two dancers revolve around a shared point, their outstretched arms joining them in a choreography that feels both intimate and infinite.
Brilliant blues, emerald greens, radiant yellows, and vibrant reds sweep across the composition as traditional Rajasthani garments transform into circles of colour and motion. The simplicity of the background allows the dancers to command the entire space, creating the sensation that the world itself has fallen away, leaving only rhythm, movement, and celebration.
The painting is a tribute to the joy and freedom found within traditional dance, where every spin becomes an expression of identity, culture, and shared experience.
