The story
Before the skirts begin to spin, before the colours become a whirlwind, there is a single beat.
The drummer knows.
The drummer knows when the dancers are ready. The drummer knows when the rhythm should slow, when it should rise, and when it should unleash the full joy of celebration. Long before the audience notices the movement, the musician has already set it in motion.
In The Drummer Knows, Sivabalan portrays this often-overlooked relationship at the heart of Rajasthan's Teej Festival. Two dancers embrace the rhythm in motion, their garments blooming into vibrant patterns of colour, while the drummer remains steady, anchoring the entire performance.
The painting celebrates a tradition where music and movement depend upon one another. The dancers may carry the spectacle, but the drummer carries the heartbeat.
Set against a minimalist background, the figures appear suspended in time, allowing the viewer to focus solely on the energy exchanged between rhythm and dance. The result is a work that honours not only the visual splendour of Teej but also the shared understanding between performers that transforms music into celebration.
Ultimately, this is a painting about connection. Between musician and dancer. Between tradition and performance. Between rhythm and joy.
Supplied with a serialised Ivory & Ink certificate of authenticity and framed in the UK by a Guild Certified framer.
In The Drummer Knows, Sivabalan captures the invisible force that brings every celebration to life, rhythm. At the centre of the composition, dancers move in sweeping arcs of colour while a traditional drummer stands beside them, holding the pulse that guides every turn, step, and gesture.
The vibrant reds, oranges, pinks, and blues of Rajasthan's traditional attire radiate energy against the simplicity of the background. Stripped of visual distractions, the viewer's attention is drawn entirely to movement and music, revealing the intimate connection between dance and rhythm.
The composition celebrates not only the dancers who command attention but also the musicians whose rhythms create the foundation for every performance.
