The story
A storm does not always arrive with thunder.
Sometimes it arrives with music.
During Rajasthan's Teej Festival, the sound of drums, songs, and laughter fills the air as dancers gather to celebrate the arrival of the monsoon season. As the rhythm builds, skirts begin to swirl and colours rise from the earth like a whirlwind.
In Two Storms, One Ghoomar, Sivabalan captures the instant when two dancers become forces of nature. Their flowing garments expand into vast circles of colour, creating twin storms of movement across the canvas. Though each dancer spins independently, their movements remain connected by rhythm, tradition, and shared celebration.
The title reflects this duality. Two individuals. Two storms. Yet one dance.
The Ghoomar is more than a performance. It is a living tradition passed from generation to generation, carrying stories of community, womanhood, festivity, and cultural pride. Every turn of the dancer echoes those who danced before, creating an unbroken thread between the past and present.
Through this vibrant composition, Sivabalan invites the viewer to experience not simply the appearance of the dance, but its energy. The work celebrates movement, freedom, joy, and the enduring power of cultural traditions to bring people together.
Supplied with a serialised Ivory & Ink certificate of authenticity and framed in the UK by a Guild Certified framer.
In Two Storms, One Ghoomar, Sivabalan captures the breathtaking energy of Rajasthan's celebrated Ghoomar dance during the vibrant Teej Festival. Two dancers whirl across the composition, their flowing skirts exploding into waves of colour, movement, and rhythm.
Rendered with remarkable dynamism, the dancers appear almost weightless, their swirling garments transforming into living patterns of crimson, emerald, sapphire, violet, and gold. Against a minimal background, the focus rests entirely on the spectacle of movement itself, allowing colour and form to convey the spirit of celebration.
The painting is a joyful tribute to Rajasthan's rich cultural heritage, where dance becomes both a visual language and a communal expression of happiness, tradition, and identity.
