The story
Temple architecture remains one of Sivabalan's most enduring sources of inspiration. During visits to temples across South India, he became fascinated by the way light interacts with carved pillars, painted ceilings, and expansive corridors.
What inspired this particular work was not only the grandeur of the architecture but also the extraordinary ceiling decorations that often go unnoticed by visitors. While many people focus on the sanctum or the processional pathways, Sivabalan was drawn to the intricate patterns, colours, and symbolism above, where artistry and spirituality merge into a single visual language.
The artist sought to capture that moment of wonder when a visitor pauses, looks upward, and discovers an entire universe of colour and craftsmanship suspended overhead.
Supplied with a serialised Ivory & Ink certificate of authenticity and framed in the UK by a Guild Certified framer.
In Heaven Has a Ceiling, Sivabalan transforms sacred architecture into a vision of wonder and transcendence. The viewer stands at the threshold of an immense temple hall, where endless rows of illuminated pillars guide the eye towards a distant sanctum while an extraordinary painted ceiling unfolds overhead like a celestial tapestry.
Rich golds, deep blues, vibrant reds, and intricate geometric motifs create a rhythmic harmony throughout the composition. Light pours across the carved columns, revealing centuries of craftsmanship and devotion embedded within the stone. The dramatic perspective amplifies the sense of scale, making the temple appear infinite, as though extending beyond the physical world into the spiritual.
More than an architectural study, the painting is an invitation to look upward and experience the awe that sacred spaces are designed to inspire.
