The story
Temple architecture has long been one of Sivabalan's greatest artistic inspirations. Whenever he visits temples, he is captivated by the way natural light filters between pillars, creating layers of depth, colour, and atmosphere.
For the artist, these spaces feel like living paintings. The interplay of illumination and shadow reveals intricate carvings, architectural details, and perspectives that constantly evolve throughout the day. It is this sense of discovery that became the foundation of his celebrated temple series.
In this work, Sivabalan was particularly inspired by a quiet moment within a temple corridor, where light streamed through the columns and illuminated the space in rich golden tones. The presence of the temple elephant, a revered and familiar figure within many South Indian temple traditions, added a human and cultural dimension that completed the composition.
Supplied with a serialised Ivory & Ink certificate of authenticity and framed in the UK by a Guild Certified framer.
Bathed in golden light, The Corridor of a Thousand Prayers draws the viewer into the sacred heart of a South Indian temple. A seemingly endless procession of intricately carved pillars leads the eye toward a distant elephant and its handler, creating a powerful sense of depth, reverence, and anticipation.
Warm amber light pours through the temple's architecture, illuminating carvings that have stood witness to generations of worshippers. Above, richly decorated ceiling motifs unfold rhythmically across the corridor, echoing the spiritual energy embedded within the space. The careful balance of light and shadow transforms stone into something almost ethereal, turning architecture into an experience rather than a structure.
Through his mastery of colour and perspective, Sivabalan invites us to journey through a space where history, devotion, and artistry converge.
