Artist Profile: Santhana Krishnan

K. R. Santhana Krishnan is a Chennai-based painter whose entire practice is built around a single, inexhaustible subject: the door.
Since graduating with a Master of Fine Arts from the College of Fine Arts, Chennai in 2000, Krishnan has dedicated over two decades to documenting and reimagining the entranceways of rural South India — wooden, soot-covered, marked with kum-kum and turmeric, bearing corporation numbers, election symbols, and the faded traces of lives lived within. His works are not architectural studies; they are quiet acts of cultural memory. Each door, he believes, has a tale to tell of the house, its owners, and their world.
Working primarily in acrylic on canvas and mixed media on wood, Krishnan builds up surfaces with a painter's sensitivity and an ethnographer's eye. Many of his works incorporate the walls adjacent to the door — sites of popular imagery, film posters from the 1970s, calendar goddesses after Ravi Varma — weaving personal nostalgia with the visual culture of a rapidly changing India.
His practice has earned sustained international recognition, with solo exhibitions at Jehangir Art Gallery (Mumbai), Kynkyny Art Gallery (Bangalore), Indigo Blue Art Gallery (Singapore), and participation in Affordable Art Fairs in Singapore and Melbourne. He has exhibited across Europe, the Middle East, East Asia, and the Americas. Recent residencies include the Varaver Art Residency in Basel (2023) and AUM Art Camp in Bali (2024).

At a time when traditional domestic architecture is vanishing beneath glass and steel, Krishnan's doors stand as a vivid, affectionate archive — a reminder that thresholds, once crossed, are rarely truly lost.
